Table Mountain

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has been running since 1929 and was upgraded with Swiss-engineered rotating cabins in 1997. Each cabin rotates 360° during the 5-minute ascent, ensuring every passenger gets panoramic views. At the summit, a network of well-maintained paths lead to viewpoints overlooking the city bowl, Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles, and the Atlantic seaboard. The café at the top serves locally roasted coffee and light meals with the best views in Africa.

Table Mountain offers trails for every fitness level. Platteklip Gorge (1.5–2 hours, moderate) is the most direct route with stone steps up the front face. India Venster (2–3 hours, challenging) rewards with the most dramatic scenery and scrambling sections. Skeleton Gorge via Kirstenbosch (3–4 hours, strenuous) winds through ancient Afromontane forest. Table Mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Cape Floral Kingdom — the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms. Over 1,470 plant species grow on the mountain, more than in the entire United Kingdom. Look out for the endemic Table Mountain ghost frog, dassies (rock hyraxes), and the rare Verreaux's eagle. The fynbos displays are spectacular from August to October when wildflowers carpet the slopes.

Table Mountain creates its own weather — the famous "tablecloth" cloud can roll in within minutes. Check the webcam before heading up and bring layers even in summer. The cable car closes in strong winds (southeaster season: December–March). Morning is generally calmer and clearer. Buy cable car tickets online to skip the queue — peak-season waits can exceed 2 hours. Sunset from the top is magical but time your descent carefully.
