Lesotho
The Kingdom in the Sky — Africa's highest country & mountain adventure paradise
Why Visit Lesotho?
Lesotho is Africa's only country that lies entirely above 1,000 metres — the "Kingdom in the Sky." This mountain monarchy encircled by South Africa offers dramatic landscapes, Basotho pony trekking through highland villages, the legendary Sani Pass 4x4 ascent, and a winter ski resort that's Africa's best-kept secret. For adventurous travellers seeking something completely different, Lesotho delivers.
Sani Pass — Epic 4x4 Adventure
The legendary Sani Pass is one of Africa's most dramatic mountain roads — a heart-pounding 4x4 ascent from KwaZulu-Natal to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment. Arrive at Africa's highest pub and watch the world drop away beneath you.
Basotho Pony Trekking
Lesotho's famous Basotho ponies have navigated these mountains for centuries. Multi-day pony treks through remote highland villages, sleeping in traditional rondavels, offer one of Africa's most authentic cultural adventures.
Africa's Winter Wonderland
AfriSki — Africa's premier ski resort — offers snow sports from June to August. Skiing in Africa is a bucket-list experience that surprises everyone who tries it.
Dinosaur Footprints & Ancient Art
Lesotho has some of Africa's most accessible dinosaur footprints — 200-million-year-old tracks at Moyeni (Quthing) and Tsikoane. Combined with San rock art at Ha Baroana, history runs deep in these mountains.
Fly-Fishing Paradise
The crystal-clear mountain streams of the Maluti and Drakensberg are stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Lesotho offers some of the finest fly-fishing in the Southern Hemisphere — at altitude, in pristine wilderness.

Enter via Sani Pass (4x4 only, from KZN), Maseru Bridge (from Bloemfontein), or other border posts. No flights to Lesotho needed.
South African Rand accepted everywhere alongside the Lesotho Loti (LSL, pegged 1:1 to ZAR).
Temperatures drop below zero in winter — pack extremely warm clothing for mountain areas.
A 4x4 is essential for rural areas. Major roads are tarred but mountain routes are gravel.
Altitude sickness is possible above 3,000m — acclimatise gradually and stay hydrated, especially at AfriSki and Sani Top.
Buy a traditional Basotho blanket in Maseru or rural trading posts — they make stunning, authentic souvenirs and genuinely keep you warm.

Lesotho Safari — FAQ
Yes — the Sani Pass day trip from Underberg/Himeville (KZN) is hugely popular. A 4x4 takes you up the pass to the top for lunch at Africa's highest pub, then back down. Allow a full day. For deeper exploration, spend 2–3 nights.
The AfriSki ski season typically runs from June to August, depending on snowfall. The resort makes artificial snow to supplement natural falls. Even outside ski season, the mountain scenery and hiking are spectacular.
Yes — Lesotho is a separate country so you need a valid passport even though it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Most nationalities receive a free entry stamp for up to 14–30 days. No separate visa needed for most visitors.
The main roads (A-roads) are well-tarred and fine for a standard car. However, a 4x4 is essential for Sani Pass, rural villages, and mountain routes. In winter, mountain roads can be icy. Hire a 4x4 or book a guided tour for remote areas.
