Chapter 01

Why Visit Sahara Desert?

The Moroccan Sahara is one of the world's most dramatic landscapes β€” towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rising 150 metres from the desert floor, vast palm-studded oases, dramatic gorges, and silence so complete you can hear your own heartbeat. A night in a luxury desert camp β€” riding camels to your camp at sunset, dining under infinite stars, and waking to watch dawn paint the dunes in shifting shades of gold, orange, and crimson β€” is one of travel's most unforgettable experiences.

01

Erg Chebbi β€” Golden Dunes

Morocco's most spectacular sand sea β€” dunes reaching 150 metres high near Merzouga. The shifting colours from dawn to dusk are mesmerising, and the scale makes you feel truly insignificant in the best possible way.

02

Luxury Desert Camps

Glamping in the Sahara has reached extraordinary levels β€” private tented suites with en-suite bathrooms, gourmet dining under the stars, and total silence broken only by Berber drumming around the fire.

03

Stargazing Like Nowhere Else

Zero light pollution means the Sahara night sky is among the most spectacular on Earth. The Milky Way is clearly visible, and shooting stars are a regular occurrence. Some camps offer telescope experiences.

04

The Route β€” Gorges & Kasbahs

The drive from Marrakech to the Sahara passes through the spectacular Dadès and Todra gorges, the UNESCO Ait Benhaddou kasbah, and the "Hollywood of Africa" film studios at Ouarzazate.

Essential Tips for Sahara Desert

The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga takes 8–10 hours β€” split it over 2 days with an overnight in the DadΓ¨s or Todra gorge.

Pack layers β€” desert days are warm but nights can drop below freezing in winter.

Bring a headtorch and warm socks for the desert camp β€” essential for predawn dune walks and star photography.

A telephoto lens captures the most dramatic dune photographs β€” the patterns of light and shadow are extraordinary.

The Agafay Desert near Marrakech offers a shorter desert experience (1 hour from the city) for those with limited time.

Sandboarding down the dunes is increasingly popular β€” camps provide boards and basic instruction.

Frequently Asked

Sahara Desert Safari β€” FAQ

The classic route is a 2-day drive via the Atlas Mountains, Ait Benhaddou, and the Dadès/Todra gorges — it's one of Morocco's most scenic road trips. Alternatively, fly to Errachidia and drive 1.5 hours to Merzouga. We arrange comfortable private transfers with experienced drivers.

Think glamping at its finest β€” spacious tented suites with real beds, en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and Berber carpets. Gourmet dinner is served under the stars, followed by traditional music around the campfire. It's comfortable, atmospheric, and unforgettable.

Winter nights (November–February) can drop to 0–5Β°C. Spring and autumn nights are 10–15Β°C. Camps provide warm blankets and hot water bottles. Pack a warm jacket and layers for evening and early morning.

The Agafay Desert is a rocky desert near Marrakech (1 hour drive) β€” it doesn't have the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi but offers stunning luxury camps, quad biking, and stargazing. It's ideal for shorter stays or as a complement to the "real" Sahara experience.
