Garden Route & Big Five Eastern Cape Safari

Full day exploring the Mother City. Cable car up Table Mountain, drive Chapman's Peak, visit the penguins at Boulders Beach, and stand at the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. Lunch in Simon's Town.

Morning wine tour through Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Taste reserve wines at three estates and enjoy a vineyard lunch. In the afternoon, begin the coastal drive eastward to Hermanus — one of the world's best land-based whale watching spots.

Hermanus is the whale capital of the world. Walk the cliff-top whale path for land-based sightings (in season), or take a boat-based whale watching trip. Optional: shark cage diving at Gansbaai or kayaking with seals. Afternoon free to explore the old harbour and craft market.

Leave the coast and drive the scenic Route 62 over the Langeberg mountains into the semi-arid Little Karoo. Arrive in Oudtshoorn — the ostrich capital of the world. Visit the Cango Caves, a spectacular underground limestone cathedral. Evening ostrich farm dinner with biltong and Karoo lamb.

Cross the Outeniqua Pass into the Garden Route proper. Arrive at Knysna, the jewel of the coast, set on a vast tidal lagoon guarded by the dramatic Knysna Heads. Take a lagoon cruise, visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, and enjoy fresh Knysna oysters at a waterfront restaurant.

Morning walk through the ancient Knysna Forest — home to the last wild elephants of the Garden Route. Drive to Plettenberg Bay for an ocean safari to spot dolphins, seals, and (in season) whales from the water. Afternoon at Robberg Nature Reserve — a dramatic peninsula hike with 360° ocean views.

Drive east to the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. Walk the famous suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth — a dramatic walkway over churning gorge waters. Optional: blackwater tubing, canopy tour (zipline through ancient trees), or kayaking up the Storms River. This is South Africa's adventure coast.

Continue east to Addo Elephant National Park — home to over 600 elephants, the densest population on Earth. A guided game drive through Addo reveals elephant breeding herds, buffalo, zebra, warthog, and kudu. The park is also one of the few places where you can see the Marine Big 5 (whale, dolphin, seal, penguin, white shark) nearby. Arrive at Shamwari in the late afternoon.

Your first full day in the bush. Dawn game drive with expert rangers tracking lion, rhino, and cheetah across 25,000 hectares of restored Eastern Cape bushveld. Return for brunch, then visit Shamwari's Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary — a rehabilitation centre for rescued lions and leopards. Afternoon game drive with sundowner drinks in the bush.

Guided bush walk through the valley, learning tracking, birding, and bushcraft from your ranger. Optional conservation experience — rhino monitoring, anti-poaching patrol ride-along, or wildlife rehabilitation volunteering. Final afternoon game drive to complete your Big Five checklist. Farewell boma dinner under the Southern Cross.

Final morning game drive if time allows. Private transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport for your onward flight. Or extend: add 3 nights in the Addo Marine Big 5 for whale and shark encounters, or fly to Johannesburg for a Soweto city experience.
