Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Where Fynbos Meets the Ocean
About Grootbos
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is unlike any safari in Africa. Perched on a hilltop overlooking Walker Bay near Hermanus in the Western Cape, this 2,500-hectare reserve offers a rare combination of marine wildlife, ancient fynbos forests, and sustainable luxury that has earned it multiple global awards.
Instead of the Big Five on savannah, Grootbos delivers the Marine Big Five — southern right whales breaching metres from shore (June–December), great white sharks, bottlenose dolphins, Cape fur seals, and African penguins. On land, expert botanists lead walks through 800-year-old milkwood forests and one of the most biodiverse fynbos regions on Earth, with over 800 documented plant species.
The Grootbos Foundation drives community empowerment through its Green Futures horticulture academy, football foundation, and sustainable farming projects — making every stay a contribution to local transformation. Two luxurious lodges blend contemporary design with sweeping ocean views.
