Kruger National Park Rest Camps
Africa's Greatest Wildlife Sanctuary
About Kruger National Park Rest Camps
Kruger National Park is Africa's flagship wildlife destination — nearly 2 million hectares of untamed wilderness stretching across Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Its 12 main rest camps offer the most accessible and affordable Big Five safari experience in South Africa.
Skukuza, the park's largest camp and administrative headquarters, sits on the southern bank of the Sabie River with accommodation ranging from campsites to guest houses. Lower Sabie, further east on the same river, is celebrated for its spectacular views and high wildlife density. Satara, in the central section, is surrounded by open grasslands that attract large predator populations.
What makes a Kruger self-drive safari magical is the independence. You set your own pace, choose your own routes, and make your own discoveries. Wake before dawn, grab a flask of coffee, and head out on tar or gravel roads where any bend could reveal an elephant herd, a leopard in a tree, or a pride of lions on a kill. It's raw, unfiltered Africa — and at a fraction of the cost of a private lodge.
SANParks also offers guided morning and sunset game drives, night drives, and bush walks led by experienced field rangers — adding expert interpretation to the self-drive experience.
