Hermanus holds a unique distinction in the wildlife world — it's the only town that employs an official Whale Crier, who walks the cliff paths blowing a kelp horn when whales are spotted. And they're spotted almost constantly during the season.
Southern right whales — massive, gentle creatures up to 15 metres long — come to Walker Bay every year to calve and mate, often swimming within 20 metres of the shore. From the famous cliff path, you can watch mothers teaching their calves to breach, spy-hop, and tail-slap.
