Come face to face with mountain gorillas in the misty volcanic highlands of Uganda & Rwanda
There are fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas left on Earth β and every single one of them lives in the volcanic highlands where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo converge. Gorilla trekking is the privilege of hiking through ancient montane rainforest to sit with a habituated gorilla family for one transformative hour. You will watch silverbacks beat their chests, mothers nurse tiny infants, and juveniles tumble through the undergrowth just metres away from you. It is the most intimate wildlife encounter in Africa β and one that many travellers describe as the single most powerful experience of their lives.

Nothing in the animal kingdom compares to the experience of sitting with a family of mountain gorillas. These gentle giants share 98.4% of our DNA, and the resemblance is uncanny β watch a silverback's eyes meet yours with unmistakable intelligence, see a mother cradling her baby with a tenderness that mirrors our own, and observe juveniles playing games that any human toddler would recognise. Your one hour with the gorillas will feel like both an eternity and a heartbeat. Many guests are moved to tears.

Mountain gorillas were once on the brink of extinction β fewer than 300 remained in the 1980s. Through decades of dedicated conservation, anti-poaching patrols, and gorilla tourism (which funds protection), the population has recovered to over 1,100. This is one of the rare conservation success stories where tourism has directly saved a species. Every permit purchased β $800 in Uganda, $1,500 in Rwanda β funds ranger salaries, veterinary care, and community development programs that incentivise local people to protect the gorillas.

The hike through Bwindi's impenetrable forest or Rwanda's volcanic bamboo slopes is an adventure in itself. Dense vegetation, dramatic elevation changes, exotic birds, and the ever-present possibility of encountering golden monkeys, forest elephants, or colobus monkeys make the trek as rewarding as the destination. Treks range from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight β the unpredictability is part of the magic.

Gone are the days of roughing it in the mountains. Uganda and Rwanda now boast world-class lodges perched on the edges of the volcanic highlands β from Bisate Lodge in Rwanda (a Wilderness Safaris property with stunning crater views) to Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Bwindi (literally inside the gorilla habitat). After a challenging morning trek, return to hot showers, gourmet cuisine, and crackling fireplaces with views over the misty mountains.
