Garden Route

A Coastal Paradise

Plan My Safari

The Garden Route is South Africa's most celebrated road trip and one of the world's greatest coastal drives. Stretching over 300 kilometres from Mossel Bay to Storms River along the country's southeastern coast, this spectacular corridor weaves through ancient Tsitsikamma forests, past turquoise lagoons, over dramatic cliff-lined headlands, and through charming coastal towns. Whether you're chasing adrenaline at Africa's highest bungee bridge, paddling with dolphins in Plettenberg Bay, or sipping craft beer in Knysna overlooking the legendary Heads, the Garden Route delivers an extraordinary diversity of experiences that rivals — and often surpasses — any road trip on the continent.

1. The Ultimate Road Trip Experience

The Garden Route is consistently rated among the world's top 10 scenic drives, and for good reason. The N2 highway and its network of side roads deliver a constantly changing tapestry of landscapes — from the whale-watching capital of Hermanus to the ancient forests of Tsitsikamma, from the lagoon town of Knysna to the golden beaches of Plettenberg Bay. Every bend reveals a new postcard view, and the route is perfectly set up for self-drive adventures with excellent roads, frequent fuel stops, and world-class accommodation at every price point.

2. Tsitsikamma — Raw, Wild, Untamed

2. Tsitsikamma — Raw, Wild, Untamed

Tsitsikamma National Park is the Garden Route's crown jewel — a rugged coastal wilderness where 800-year-old yellowwood trees tower over fern-draped gorges and the Storms River plunges through a narrow canyon into the Indian Ocean. The famous suspension bridge over Storms River Mouth is one of South Africa's most photographed spots. Hike the Otter Trail (Africa's most iconic coastal hike), kayak up the river gorge, zipline through the forest canopy, or simply walk the boardwalks through one of the oldest forests on Earth.

3. Wildlife Without the Malaria Risk

3. Wildlife Without the Malaria Risk

The Garden Route offers fantastic Big Five safari experiences at private game reserves like Gondwana, Botlierskop, and Garden Route Game Lodge — all completely malaria-free. This makes it the perfect safari destination for families with young children and travellers who prefer not to take anti-malarial medication. Combine a morning game drive with an afternoon on the beach — something no other safari destination in Africa can offer. Marine wildlife is equally spectacular: Southern Right whales (June–November), dolphins, seals, sharks, and penguins are regularly spotted.

4. Adrenaline Capital of South Africa

4. Adrenaline Capital of South Africa

The Garden Route is South Africa's adventure playground. Bloukrans Bridge hosts the world's highest commercial bungee jump at 216 metres. Storms River offers blackwater tubing through dark forest gorges. Plettenberg Bay delivers world-class skydiving over the ocean. The Knysna forests hide mountain biking trails and canopy tours. And the coastline provides outstanding surfing at Jeffrey's Bay (one of the world's top surf spots), shark cage diving, and coastal canyoneering. It's an adrenaline junkie's paradise.

Travel Tips

01

Self-drive is the best way to experience the Garden Route — hire a car in Cape Town or George and take your time.

02

Allow at least 5–7 days for a proper Garden Route trip. Rushing it means missing the best experiences.

03

Book Bloukrans bungee and Tsitsikamma activities in advance during December–January peak season.

04

The Garden Route is malaria-free — perfect for families with young children.

05

Fuel up regularly, especially before the Tsitsikamma section where petrol stations are fewer.

06

Pack layers — coastal weather can change quickly, and mornings in the forests are often misty and cool.

Complete Guide

Your Complete Guide to Garden Route

Everything you need to know for planning the perfect Garden Route experience — from the best time to visit to insider tips.

The Garden Route's unique microclimate, influenced by the meeting of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, creates mild conditions year-round. Each season offers a distinct character for road-trippers.

Summer (December – February)

Peak season brings warm temperatures (25–30°C), long daylight hours, and calm seas perfect for beach days. Knysna and Plettenberg Bay buzz with holiday energy, and all activities are fully operational. This is the busiest period — accommodation and popular activities should be booked 3–6 months in advance. School holidays (mid-December to mid-January) see the highest demand. The trade-off is higher prices and busier attractions, but the weather and energy are unmatched.

Autumn (March – May)

Our favourite season for the Garden Route. Temperatures remain warm (20–25°C), summer crowds disappear, and prices drop noticeably. March is particularly magical — the ocean is at its warmest after a summer of heating, the forests display subtle autumn colours, and availability opens up at top restaurants and accommodations. Whale migration begins in June, so late autumn visitors may catch early arrivals.

Winter (June – August)

Garden Route winters are mild (15–20°C) with periodic rainfall that turns the indigenous forests into a photographer's dream — moss-covered trees, mist-shrouded valleys, and dramatic stormy seas. This is whale watching season — Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales are frequently spotted from shore in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Hotel rates are at their lowest, and you'll have many attractions nearly to yourself. The Tsitsikamma forests are particularly atmospheric in winter mist.

Spring (September – November)

Spring is wildflower season, and while less famous here than the West Coast, the Garden Route blooms with fynbos, proteas, and forest wildflowers. Whale watching continues through October. Temperatures warm from 18°C to 24°C, and the landscape transitions from winter green to summer vibrancy. September and October offer excellent value before the peak season rush begins. Many locals consider spring the Garden Route's best-kept secret.
