Madagascar — The Eighth Continent
Madagascar is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Separated from Africa 88 million years ago, the world's fourth-largest island evolved in splendid isolation — producing species found nowhere else on the planet. Over 90% of Madagascar's wildlife is endemic, including all 100+ species of lemur.
From the otherworldly stone forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha to the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, Madagascar is a destination that defies comparison.
Madagascar Weather — Month by Month
Dry Season (April – October) — Best for Travel
April–May: End of the rains. Landscapes are green, waterfalls at full flow. Comfortable temperatures (18–28°C). Fewer tourists. An excellent time to visit.
June–August: Cool and dry (12–25°C). The "Malagasy winter." Perfect for lemur trekking — animals are easier to spot in the deciduous forests. Whale watching begins on the east coast (humpbacks, July–September). Ideal for Tsingy and western Madagascar.
September–October: Warm and dry (20–30°C). Orchids bloom. Baby lemurs appear. The landscape begins its transition. The best "shoulder" months with great weather and moderate prices.
Wet Season (November – March)
Hot and humid (25–35°C). Cyclone risk on the east coast (January–March). Some roads become impassable. However, this is when the baobabs flower and chameleons are most active.
Top Madagascar Experiences
1. Lemur Trekking — Andasibe-Mantadia
Meet the indri — the largest lemur, whose haunting call echoes through the rainforest. Night walks reveal tiny mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos, and chameleons. This park is just 3 hours from the capital.
2. Avenue of the Baobabs
One of Africa's most photographed landscapes — a row of 800-year-old baobab trees silhouetted against a blazing sunset near Morondava. Magical at dawn and dusk.
3. Tsingy de Bemaraha
A UNESCO World Heritage Site — a vast "forest" of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles rising up to 30 metres. Hiking through via ferrata routes, suspension bridges, and narrow canyons is a genuine adventure. Lemurs live among the karst formations.
4. Nosy Be — Beach & Marine Life
Madagascar's beach paradise. Whale sharks, sea turtles, coral reefs, and laid-back island vibes. Perfect for ending a wildlife trip with relaxation.
Madagascar Travel Costs
Budget: $60–$120/person/day
Mid-range: $150–$300/person/day
Luxury: $400–$800/person/day
Madagascar is one of Africa's most affordable destinations. Domestic flights are recommended to avoid long drives on unpaved roads.
