Uganda — The Pearl of Africa
Uganda is one of Africa's most underrated safari destinations. Winston Churchill called it "the pearl of Africa" — and the title still fits. From tracking endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to witnessing the mighty Nile thundering over Murchison Falls, Uganda packs an extraordinary diversity of experiences into a compact, affordable destination.
With gorilla permits at $700 (vs $1,500 in Rwanda), Uganda offers the same life-changing gorilla encounter at less than half the cost.
Uganda Weather — Month by Month
Dry Seasons (June – August & December – February)
June–August: The main dry season. Cool and comfortable (15–27°C). The best time for gorilla trekking — trails are drier and more manageable. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls parks offer excellent game viewing. Clear skies for photography.
December–February: The short dry season. Similar conditions but slightly warmer. Fewer tourists than June–August. An excellent time for primate trekking and Murchison Falls safaris.
Wet Seasons (March – May & September – November)
Rains make gorilla trails muddy and slippery — but permits are easier to get and the forest is lush and atmospheric. Wildlife viewing in savanna parks is trickier but still rewarding.
Top Uganda Experiences
1. Gorilla Trekking — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Spend one magical hour face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas. Only about 1,063 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, and half live in Bwindi. It's a once-in-a-lifetime encounter that changes you forever.
Permit cost: $700/person (book 3–6 months ahead)
→ Budget-Friendly Gorilla Trekking
2. Murchison Falls
The entire Nile River forces through a 7-metre gap and plunges 43 metres — creating the world's most powerful waterfall. Boat cruises to the base and game drives through the park deliver Big Five encounters (minus leopard, but shoebill storks!).
3. Queen Elizabeth National Park — Tree-Climbing Lions
The Ishasha sector is famous for its tree-climbing lions — one of only two populations in Africa that habitually lounge in fig trees. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise offers close encounters with hippos, elephants, and over 600 bird species.
4. Kibale Forest — Chimpanzee Tracking
Home to 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest density in Africa. Tracking chimps through the forest canopy is the perfect primate complement to gorilla trekking.
The best time for gorilla trekking — trails are drier and more manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I see the Big Five in Africa?
The best Big Five destinations include: Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands (South Africa), Masai Mara (Kenya), Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania), Okavango Delta (Botswana), and Hwange (Zimbabwe). South Africa's Eastern Cape reserves (Shamwari, Amakhala) offer malaria-free Big Five viewing. See our wildlife guide for species-specific locations.
What are the Big Five animals?
The Big Five are: Lion (king of the African bush), Leopard (elusive and beautiful), African Elephant (the largest land animal), Cape Buffalo (unpredictable and powerful), and White/Black Rhinoceros (critically endangered). The term originated from hunters describing the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot — today, they're the five most sought-after animals to photograph.
When is the Great Migration in the Serengeti?
The Great Migration is a year-round movement of 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and 200,000 gazelle. Key highlights: calving in Ndutu (January–March), crossing the Grumeti River (June–July), the dramatic Mara River crossings (July–October), and the return south (November–December). See our Tanzania guide for timing details.
Can I see gorillas on safari?
Yes! Mountain gorilla trekking is available in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest). Permits cost $1,500 in Rwanda and $700 in Uganda. You'll spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family — it's one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth. See our Rwanda guide for booking details.
What wildlife can I see on safari?
Africa is home to the Big Five, plus cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, hyena, 1,000+ bird species, and many more. Marine wildlife includes great white sharks, whales (June–November), dolphins, penguins, and seals. Each destination has its speciality species — explore our wildlife guide for details.
How far in advance should I book a safari?
We recommend booking 6–12 months in advance for peak season (June–October), especially for popular lodges. Off-season travel can often be booked 2–3 months ahead. Last-minute deals are sometimes available for shoulder seasons. The earlier you book, the better your chances of securing your preferred dates and lodges.
Do I need travel insurance for safari?
Yes — comprehensive travel insurance is essential and often required by safari lodges. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation (important in remote bush areas), trip cancellation, luggage loss, and adventure activities. We can recommend reputable safari-specific insurance providers.
