Shark Cage Diving Near Cape Town — Face to Face with Nature's Apex Predator

Shark cage diving is one of the most exhilarating wildlife experiences on Earth — and the waters around Cape Town are one of the few places where you can do it reliably. Submerge yourself in a steel cage as Great White sharks glide past just inches away, their ancient eyes meeting yours through crystal-clear water.

Where Does Shark Cage Diving Happen?

The primary location is Gansbaai, a fishing town approximately 2 hours from Cape Town. Known as the "Great White Shark Capital of the World," Gansbaai's Shark Alley — the narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock — has one of the highest concentrations of Great Whites anywhere on the planet.

How Much Does Shark Cage Diving Cost?

Standard trip: R2,500-R3,500 (~$140-$195 USD) per person
Includes: Hotel transfers from Cape Town, breakfast/lunch, all equipment, cage time, marine biologist briefing
Duration: Full day (depart 05:30, return ~15:00-16:00)

What to Expect — Hour by Hour

  1. 05:30 — Hotel pickup from Cape Town
  2. 07:30 — Arrive Gansbaai, breakfast & safety briefing
  3. 08:30 — Boat departure to Shark Alley (20 min ride)
  4. 09:00-12:00 — Cage diving! Groups of 4-6 rotate in the cage
  5. 12:30 — Return to harbour, hot lunch & shark talk
  6. 15:00 — Return to Cape Town

Is It Safe?

Yes. The steel cage is purpose-built to withstand shark contact. In over 25 years of commercial shark cage diving in South Africa, there has never been a fatality. Operators are licensed, boats carry safety equipment, and trained crew are in the water with you at all times.

Best Time of Year

Year-round, but peak shark activity is April to September (South African winter). Water visibility is best February-April and September-November. Whale season (June-November) means you may spot Southern Right whales too.

Do You Need to Be a Swimmer?

No! The cage has a platform to stand on, and you wear a wetsuit with full buoyancy. You don't swim — you simply hold the cage bars and duck your head underwater when a shark approaches. The operator provides all equipment including masks and wetsuits.
