Victoria Falls Complete Guide 2026 — Activities, Best Time & Safari Combos

The Smoke That Thunders
Victoria Falls — known locally as "Mosi-oa-Tunya" (The Smoke That Thunders) — is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1,708 metres wide and up to 108 metres tall, it is the largest curtain of falling water on Earth, creating a spray plume visible from 50 kilometres away.
But Victoria Falls is far more than a waterfall. It's an adventure capital, a safari gateway, and a destination that combines natural wonder with world-class experiences. From bungee jumping off the bridge to luxury Zambezi River cruises, there's something for every type of traveller.
- Width: 1,708 metres (twice the width of Niagara Falls)
- Height: Up to 108 metres
- Best for volume: February–May (peak flood)
- Best for views: August–December (lower water, better gorge visibility)
- Border: Zimbabwe (south) and Zambia (north)
Zimbabwe Side vs Zambia Side
Zimbabwe side: 75% of the falls face Zimbabwe, making this the best side for panoramic photography. The rainforest walk offers 16 viewpoints along the gorge edge. Victoria Falls town has excellent infrastructure, restaurants, and accommodation.
Zambia side: Gets you closer to the falls' edge — you can stand at the Knife Edge Bridge with spray drenching you. The Devil's Pool experience (swimming at the falls' edge, September–December) is on this side.
💡 Our Recommendation
Stay on the Zimbabwe side for the best views and infrastructure, but get a day visa to visit the Zambia side too. Both perspectives are worth experiencing.
Top Activities
- Falls viewing: The Zimbabwe rainforest walk is a must — 16 viewpoints along the gorge (wear a waterproof!)
- Sunset Zambezi cruise: Sip cocktails as elephants and hippos line the riverbanks — the quintessential Vic Falls experience
- Helicopter "Flight of Angels": A 15-minute scenic flight over the falls and gorges ($150–200/person)
- Bungee jumping: 111 metres off the Victoria Falls Bridge — one of the world's highest bungee jumps
- White water rafting: Class V rapids in the Batoka Gorge — one of the world's top rafting experiences
- Devil's Pool: Swim at the very edge of the falls (Zambia side, September–December only)
- Moonlight dinner: Dine on the edge of the gorge under a full moon with the falls illuminated
Safari Combinations
Victoria Falls is perfectly positioned as a gateway to several outstanding safari destinations:
- Hwange National Park: Zimbabwe's largest park, 2 hours from Vic Falls. Huge elephant herds and excellent predator viewing. 2–3 nights recommended.
- Chobe National Park: Just 1.5 hours into Botswana. The Chobe River frontage has Africa's largest elephant concentration. Day trips or 2-night stays.
- Okavango Delta: A short flight into Botswana's water wilderness. The perfect luxury extension.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?
It depends on what you want. February–May for maximum water volume and thundering spray. August–December for the best photography (lower water reveals the gorge structure) and the Devil's Pool experience. There's no bad time — the falls are spectacular year-round.
How many days do I need?
2–3 full days for the falls and activities. Add 2–3 nights for a safari extension at Hwange or Chobe. A 5–7 day Victoria Falls + safari itinerary is our most popular recommendation.
