The Garden Route — South Africa's Most Scenic Drive
The Garden Route is a 300km stretch of coastline between Mossel Bay and Storms River that packs more natural beauty into a single road trip than almost anywhere else on Earth. Ancient forests, turquoise lagoons, dramatic cliffs, whale-filled bays, and adrenaline activities — all connected by one of the world's great coastal drives.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Cape Town → Hermanus (120km)
Leave day trips">Cape Town via the N2 and coastal route through Gordon's Bay — one of South Africa's most underrated scenic drives. Stop at Stony Point for African penguins (less crowded than Boulders Beach), then continue to Hermanus — the world's best land-based whale watching destination (June-November). Walk the cliff paths, enjoy fresh seafood at Harbour Road restaurant.
Day 2: Hermanus → Wilderness (300km)
Drive via Swellendam (South Africa's third-oldest town) and Mossel Bay. Arrive in Wilderness — a small village backed by pristine beaches, lagoons, and indigenous forest. Canoe the Touw River estuary, walk the Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail, and watch the sunset from the beach.
Day 3: Wilderness → Knysna (60km)
Knysna is the Garden Route's crown jewel. Explore the famous Knysna Heads — two sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon entrance. Eat at the Knysna Waterfront, take a lagoon cruise, and visit Featherbed Nature Reserve for forest walks and views.
Day 4: Knysna → Plettenberg Bay (30km)
"Plett" is where South African holidaymakers dream of retiring. Robberg Nature Reserve offers a world-class 9km circular hike with seals, dolphins, and whales below. Visit Monkeyland and Birds of Eden — the world's largest free-flight bird aviary. End with sundowners at The Lookout restaurant.
Day 5-6: Plettenberg Bay → Tsitsikamma (70km)
The grand finale. Tsitsikamma National Park is where the Garden Route reaches its climax — ancient yellowwood forests, the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge, and the world's highest commercial bungee jump (216m) at Bloukrans Bridge. Hike the first section of the famous Otter Trail, kayak the river gorge, or zipline through the forest canopy.
Day 7: Return to Cape Town or Continue to Addo/Kruger
Drive back via the N2 (5 hours) or extend your trip to Addo Elephant National Park (2 hours from Tsitsikamma) for a Big Five safari day trip, completing the ultimate South African road trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Cape Town?
October to April (spring/summer) offers the warmest, driest weather — perfect for beaches, outdoor activities, and wine tasting. December–February is peak season with long, sunny days. The shoulder months (March–April, October–November) offer excellent weather with fewer crowds and better prices.
Is Cape Town safe for tourists?
Cape Town is generally safe for tourists who take standard precautions. Popular tourist areas like the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Constantia, and Table Mountain are well-patrolled. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, use reputable transport, and keep valuables secure. Our guides know the city intimately and ensure safe, enjoyable experiences.
How many days do you need in Cape Town?
We recommend 4–5 days minimum to see the highlights: Table Mountain, Cape Peninsula, wine country, and a day trip or two. To truly experience Cape Town — including the Garden Route, shark diving, or a safari extension — plan for 7–10 days.
What are the must-see attractions in Cape Town?
Don't miss: Table Mountain (cable car or hike), Cape Peninsula Drive (Chapman's Peak, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach penguins), V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Stellenbosch/Franschhoek wine estates, Robben Island, and a sunset cruise. See our Cape Town guide for detailed recommendations.
Can you combine Cape Town with a safari?
Absolutely — and we highly recommend it! Fly from Cape Town to Kruger/Sabi Sands (2 hrs), or visit the malaria-free Aquila or Inverdoorn reserves (2 hrs drive). Our Cape Town + Safari combo packages are our most popular itineraries. We handle all flights, transfers, and accommodation seamlessly.
