Chapter 01

Why Visit Burundi?

Burundi is one of Africa's last truly undiscovered travel destinations. Wedged between Rwanda, Tanzania, and the DRC, this tiny nation sits on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second-deepest lake. From hippo-filled Rusizi River delta to the cultural riches of Gitega and the lakeside beaches of Bujumbura, Burundi rewards the most adventurous travellers with authentic experiences untouched by mass tourism.

01

Lake Tanganyika

The world's second-deepest and longest freshwater lake borders Burundi's west coast. Golden sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and spectacular sunsets make this a hidden beach paradise. Excellent snorkelling reveals unique cichlid species found nowhere else.

02

Completely Off the Beaten Track

Burundi receives fewer than 5,000 tourists per year. If you want to experience authentic, unfiltered Africa before the world discovers it, this is your moment.

03

Gateway to the Great Lakes

Combined with Rwanda and DRC, Burundi forms part of the Great Lakes circuit — one of Africa's most biodiverse and culturally rich regions.

04

Royal Drummers of Burundi

The UNESCO-recognised Royal Drummers (Tambourinaires) perform one of Africa's most powerful cultural spectacles. Enormous sacred drums, athletic choreography, and thunderous rhythms create an unforgettable experience.

05

Source of the Nile

The southernmost source of the Nile River is marked by a pyramid at Kasumo in southern Burundi. Stand at the origin point of Africa's greatest river — a powerful and symbolic pilgrimage for any Africa enthusiast.

Frequently Asked

Burundi Safari — FAQ

Bujumbura and tourist areas are generally safe. The political situation has stabilised significantly in recent years. Travel with a reputable local guide, avoid political gatherings, and check current travel advisories. Tourist infrastructure is basic but improving.

The most popular route is Kigali → Bujumbura overland (3–4 hours via Huye/Butare). Spend 2–3 days in Burundi exploring Lake Tanganyika, Rusizi, and Gitega before returning to Kigali. Alternatively, fly Bujumbura–Kigali (45 min). A 10-day Great Lakes circuit covering Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC is the ultimate itinerary.

Bujumbura has more to offer than you'd expect — beautiful Lake Tanganyika beaches, the lively central market, Livingstone-Stanley Museum, Rusizi National Park (hippos and crocodiles 30 min away), vibrant nightlife, and excellent lakeside restaurants serving fresh Tanganyika fish.

Performances happen regularly at the Gitega National Museum and occasionally at cultural events in Bujumbura. The Gishora Drum Sanctuary near Gitega offers the most authentic experience. Ask your guide to arrange a performance — they can often be organised on request.

What Our Guests Say About Burundi

The Royal Drummers of Burundi are electrifying — UNESCO heritage come alive. Lake Tanganyika at sunset from Bujumbura's beach promenade is one of Africa's most beautiful scenes. A country of genuine surprises.

Kibira Forest was magical — tracking chimpanzees through the mountain forest with almost no other tourists around. Burundi feels like Africa before mass tourism, and Ingwe navigated the logistics perfectly.
