Burundi Safari — FAQ
Bujumbura and tourist areas are generally safe. The political situation has stabilised significantly in recent years. Travel with a reputable local guide, avoid political gatherings, and check current travel advisories. Tourist infrastructure is basic but improving.
The most popular route is Kigali → Bujumbura overland (3–4 hours via Huye/Butare). Spend 2–3 days in Burundi exploring Lake Tanganyika, Rusizi, and Gitega before returning to Kigali. Alternatively, fly Bujumbura–Kigali (45 min). A 10-day Great Lakes circuit covering Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC is the ultimate itinerary.
Bujumbura has more to offer than you'd expect — beautiful Lake Tanganyika beaches, the lively central market, Livingstone-Stanley Museum, Rusizi National Park (hippos and crocodiles 30 min away), vibrant nightlife, and excellent lakeside restaurants serving fresh Tanganyika fish.
Performances happen regularly at the Gitega National Museum and occasionally at cultural events in Bujumbura. The Gishora Drum Sanctuary near Gitega offers the most authentic experience. Ask your guide to arrange a performance — they can often be organised on request.
