Why Visit Congo (DRC) — Virunga?

The Democratic Republic of Congo is Africa's last great wilderness frontier. Virunga National Park — Africa's oldest and most biodiverse protected area — is home to mountain gorillas, the awe-inspiring Nyiragongo lava lake, and the legendary Rwenzori "Mountains of the Moon." This is not a destination for the faint-hearted, but for adventurous travellers, it delivers experiences found absolutely nowhere else.

01

Nyiragongo — World's Largest Lava Lake

Hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo to witness the world's most spectacular lava lake — a churning cauldron of molten rock glowing red-orange against the night sky. Overnight on the crater rim in one of Africa's most extreme camping experiences.

02

Most Affordable Gorilla Permits

At $400 per person, Virunga's gorilla permits are the most affordable in Africa. The experience is raw, authentic, and genuinely wild — trekking through dense rainforest with armed rangers.

03

Ultimate Adventure Destination

For travellers who've "done" the conventional safari circuit, Virunga offers the ultimate frontier experience. Few tourists, dramatic landscapes, and a real sense of exploration.

04

Eastern Lowland Gorillas

Kahuzi-Biéga National Park is the only place to trek the world's largest primate — the endangered Eastern lowland gorilla (Grauer's gorilla). A profoundly moving experience available nowhere else on Earth.

05

Conservation With Purpose

Every dollar spent in Virunga directly funds Africa's most courageous ranger force. Over 200 rangers have given their lives protecting this park. Your visit supports their vital mission and local community development.

Frequently Asked

Congo (DRC) — Virunga Safari — FAQ

Security has improved significantly. Virunga Alliance provides armed ranger escorts for all activities. Always book through official channels, follow security briefings, and check current travel advisories. When open, the park is visited by thousands of tourists safely each year.

Book directly through the Virunga Alliance website (visitvirunga.org) or through us. Permits cost $400 per person and include park entrance fees, ranger escort, and a one-hour gorilla encounter. Book at least 2–3 months in advance for peak season (June–September).

Absolutely — this is the most popular combination. Fly into Kigali, explore Rwanda's gorillas and genocide memorials, then cross to Goma (15-minute flight or 3-hour drive) for Nyiragongo and Virunga's gorillas. A 7–10 day itinerary covers both beautifully.

The Nyiragongo hike is strenuous — approximately 6 hours uphill through dense forest and volcanic terrain. You need to be reasonably fit and comfortable hiking at altitude (3,470m summit). Porters are available to carry your pack, which helps enormously.

What Our Guests Say About Congo (DRC) — Virunga

Sleeping on the rim of Nyiragongo with the world's largest lava lake glowing below was the most surreal experience of my life. The Congo is raw, wild, and utterly unforgettable.

Virunga's gorillas are extraordinary — we spent an hour with a family of twelve, including a curious baby who came within arm's reach. At $400 per permit, it's half the price of Rwanda with arguably more intimate encounters.

The Congo is not for the faint-hearted, but Ingwe's logistics were impeccable. Gorilla trekking then Nyiragongo in 3 days — two bucket-list experiences that will stay with us forever.
