Best Hiking Trails on Table Mountain
Platteklip Gorge — The Classic Route
Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous | Duration: 2-3 hours up | Distance: 2.7km
The most direct route to the summit. It's steep, unshaded, and relentless — but the views from the top make every step worth it. Start early to avoid the heat.
Skeleton Gorge via Kirstenbosch — The Scenic Route
Difficulty: Moderate | Duration: 3-4 hours up | Distance: 5km
Start from the stunning Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and wind through indigenous forest, past waterfalls, and up a rocky gorge. A favourite of locals and photographers.
India Venster — The Adventurous Route
Difficulty: Moderate (with light scrambling) | Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours | Distance: 3km
A thrilling route with some rock scrambling and chain sections. Quieter than Platteklip with better views throughout. Our guides' favourite route.
Safety Tips
- Never hike alone — the mountain claims several lives each year
- Carry 2+ litres of water — there's no water on the trail
- Start before 10am — afternoon cloud ("the tablecloth") rolls in fast
- Wear proper hiking shoes — sandals and slip-ons are dangerous
- Download offline maps — phone signal is patchy on some routes
