Why Visit Samburu National Reserve?

Samburu National Reserve is Kenya's wild northern frontier — an arid, dramatic landscape of red-earth plains, palm-fringed rivers, and volcanic outcrops where species found nowhere else in Kenya roam freely. The famous "Samburu Special Five" — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich — make this a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts seeking something different from the crowded Masai Mara. Add in the proud warrior culture of the Samburu people and you have one of East Africa's most rewarding safari destinations.

01

Samburu Special Five

Five species found only here in Kenya — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. Nowhere else offers this unique wildlife.

02

Dramatic Landscapes

Red-earth plains, palm-fringed Ewaso Ng'iro River, and the dramatic Koitogor and Ololokwe mountain backdrops — far more dramatic than typical savanna.

03

Predator Rich

Excellent leopard sightings along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, lion prides, cheetah on the open plains, and wild dogs passing through.

04

Samburu Warriors

The Samburu people are closely related to the Maasai — proud warriors with distinctive red shukas, beadwork, and ancient pastoral traditions.

05

Fewer Crowds

Samburu receives a fraction of the Masai Mara's visitors — enjoy game drives without minibus traffic and more intimate wildlife encounters.

06

Frequently Asked

Samburu National Reserve Safari — FAQ

The Samburu Special Five are wildlife species found only in Kenya's northern reserves: Grevy's zebra (endangered, with narrow stripes), reticulated giraffe (striking geometric pattern), gerenuk (the "giraffe gazelle" that stands on hind legs to browse), Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich (blue-necked). All five are commonly seen in Samburu.

Samburu is 5–6 hours drive north of Nairobi via the Nanyuki road (the drive through Laikipia is scenic). Charter flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi take about 1 hour and land at Samburu airstrip.

Yes! Samburu + Masai Mara is an excellent Kenya combination — you get the rare northern species plus the classic Mara migration experience. Charter flights connect the two in about 1.5 hours.

The Samburu National Reserve and surrounding conservancies are completely safe for tourists. The area has excellent security and the Samburu people are welcoming hosts. The only precaution is the usual wildlife safety protocols on game drives.

Samburu is so different from the Masai Mara — the red-earth landscapes, rare species, and warrior culture create a completely unique experience. We spotted leopards three times along the river. Elephant Bedroom Camp was intimate and magical.
