Cheetah

Acinonyx jubatus

The Fastest Animal on Land

Habitat

Open grasslands and lightly wooded savanna

Diet

Carnivore

Lifespan

10–12 years (wild)

Weight

35–65 kg

The cheetah is nature's speed machine — capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and reaching top speeds of 120 km/h in short bursts. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs hunt by speed rather than stealth, chasing prey across open plains in explosive sprints that last only 20–60 seconds.

South Africa is home to approximately 1,300 cheetahs, found primarily in Kruger, the Waterberg reserves, and several Eastern Cape private reserves. The De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre near Pretoria has been instrumental in breeding and conservation efforts.
