12 Months Before: The Big Decisions

The best African safari experiences book out far in advance, particularly for peak season travel (July–October for East Africa's Great Migration; June–September for Southern Africa's dry season). If you have specific dates or a bucket-list lodge in mind, start planning at least 12 months ahead.

Choose Your Destination

Africa is vast, and each region offers a completely different safari experience. Here's a quick orientation:

6 Months Before: Paperwork and Health Prep

Visa Requirements

Visa requirements vary significantly by destination and nationality. Here's a quick overview for common safari destinations:

South Africa: Visa-free for most Western nationalities for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure date and have at least 2 blank pages.

Kenya: Most nationalities now apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) online before travel. Cost: $30 USD. Apply at least 2 weeks before departure.

Tanzania: Visa on arrival or e-visa available for most nationalities. Cost: $50 USD. Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel.

Rwanda: Visa on arrival for most nationalities. Cost: $30 USD. East African Tourist Visa ($100) covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda — excellent value if visiting multiple countries.

Botswana: Visa-free for most Western nationalities for up to 90 days.

Always check the current requirements with your country's foreign affairs department or the relevant embassy, as these change regularly.

Vaccinations and Health Preparation

Visit a travel health clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure to allow time for vaccinations to take effect. Commonly recommended vaccinations for African travel include:

Hepatitis A and B: Strongly recommended for all African destinations. Typhoid: Recommended, especially if you'll be eating street food or in rural areas. Yellow Fever: Required for entry into some countries (Uganda, Rwanda, parts of Tanzania) and if you're transiting through certain countries. Carry your yellow fever certificate. Rabies: Recommended if you'll be in remote areas or working with animals. Meningococcal meningitis: Recommended for some regions.

Malaria is a significant consideration for most safari destinations. Discuss antimalarial medication options with your doctor — the main options are Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), Doxycycline, and Lariam (mefloquine). Note that some areas of South Africa (including parts of Kruger) are malaria-risk zones, while others (like the Western Cape and Addo Elephant Park) are malaria-free. Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is non-negotiable for an African safari. Ensure your policy covers:

Medical evacuation (this can cost $50,000+ without insurance), trip cancellation and interruption, lost or delayed luggage, and adventure activities if you're planning anything beyond standard game drives. 3 Months Before: The Details

Accommodation and Internal Transfers

If you're combining multiple destinations, now is the time to book internal flights and transfers. Flying between safari destinations is often the most practical option — road distances in Africa are vast, and internal flights are surprisingly affordable when booked in advance. For multi-country itineraries, consider whether a fly-in safari makes sense — flying directly into remote camps eliminates long road transfers and maximises your time in the bush.

Safari Clothing and Gear

Safari packing is an art. The golden rules: neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige, grey — never white or bright colours that disturb wildlife), lightweight and breathable fabrics, and layers for early morning game drives when temperatures can be surprisingly cold.

Essential clothing items include: 3–4 pairs of lightweight trousers or convertible pants, 4–5 neutral-coloured shirts (long-sleeved for sun and insect protection), a warm fleece or light down jacket for early mornings, a wide-brimmed hat, and comfortable walking shoes or boots. Photography Equipment

If photography is important to you, now is the time to invest in or rent the right gear. A telephoto lens (at least 300mm, ideally 400–600mm) is essential for wildlife photography. A good pair of binoculars (8x42 or 10x42) will enhance every game drive, even if you're not a photographer. 1 Month Before: Final Preparations

Money and Banking

Notify your bank of your travel dates to prevent your cards being blocked. Carry a mix of payment methods: a credit card (Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted), a debit card for ATM withdrawals, and some US dollars in cash (USD is widely accepted across East and Southern Africa for tips, small purchases, and emergencies).

Tipping is an important part of safari culture. Budget approximately $10–15 per day for your guide, $5–10 per day for your tracker (if applicable), and $5–10 per day for lodge staff. This is in addition to your lodge rate and is greatly appreciated by the people who make your safari experience exceptional.

Communication and Connectivity

Mobile coverage varies dramatically across safari destinations. In South Africa, coverage is generally good even in Kruger. In remote areas of Botswana, Tanzania, or Zambia, you may have no signal at all — which many travellers find wonderfully liberating.

Consider purchasing a local SIM card on arrival for data (much cheaper than international roaming). WhatsApp is the primary communication tool across Africa. Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) for areas without connectivity. A portable power bank is essential — game drives can be long and camera batteries drain quickly.

Final Document Checklist

In the week before departure, gather and organise all your documents: passport (check validity and blank pages), visa approvals or e-visas, yellow fever certificate (if required), travel insurance documents, safari booking confirmations, internal flight tickets, accommodation vouchers, emergency contact numbers, and copies of all documents stored separately (and digitally in cloud storage).

Game Drive Etiquette

A few simple rules will enhance your experience and protect the wildlife: stay in the vehicle at all times unless your guide instructs otherwise, keep noise to a minimum near animals, switch your phone to silent, avoid sudden movements, and follow your guide's instructions without question — they know the bush and the animals far better than any guidebook.

The best game viewing is in the early morning (6–9am) and late afternoon (4–7pm) when animals are most active. Midday is often quiet — use this time to rest, eat, and review your photographs. The best safaris are marathons, not sprints.

Health and Safety on Safari

Take your antimalarial medication exactly as prescribed — don't skip doses because you feel fine. Apply insect repellent (DEET-based) at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Drink only bottled or purified water. Apply sunscreen every 2 hours. And listen to your body — safari days are long and physically demanding, and rest is part of the experience.
