Most resort and lodge beaches are safe for swimming. Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) exists in some areas but many lodges treat their shoreline. Always check with your accommodation. The deeper, open-water areas are generally bilharzia-free.
A minimum of 5 days covers either lake or safari. For the full experience — Liwonde safari, Lake Malawi islands, and Mount Mulanje — plan 10–14 days. Malawi combines beautifully with Zambia (South Luangwa) or Mozambique (Bazaruto).
