Why Visit Mana Pools National Park?

Mana Pools National Park is Africa's ultimate walking safari destination — a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Zambezi River floodplain where you can approach elephants, wild dogs, and lions on foot with legendary Zimbabwean guides. The "four pools" (mana means four in Shona) created by the Zambezi's old river channels attract extraordinary wildlife concentrations in the dry season, creating some of Africa's most dramatic and intimate wildlife encounters. For safari purists seeking authentic, raw wilderness experiences, Mana Pools is the holy grail.

Frequently Asked

Mana Pools National Park Safari — FAQ

Mana Pools combines Africa's most qualified guides (Zimbabwe's exams are the toughest in Africa) with a landscape that allows remarkable close approaches on foot. Walking alongside elephants, tracking wild dogs, and observing predators from ground level is a profoundly different experience from vehicle-based safaris.

Most camps operate from late May/June through October (dry season). The park technically stays open year-round, but November–April rains make many roads impassable and most camps close. September–October offers the best wildlife concentrations.

Yes! The classic Zimbabwe circuit is Mana Pools + Hwange + Victoria Falls. Charter flights connect all three. Alternatively, combine Mana Pools with Lake Kariba for a water-and-walking safari experience.

A reasonable level of fitness is recommended — walks can cover 10–15km over varied terrain. That said, your guide sets the pace and adjusts to the group. Many camps offer shorter walks alongside game drives for those who prefer a mix of activities.

What Our Guests Say About Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools is the holy grail of safari. Three days of walking with wild dogs, canoeing past hippos, and camping under stars on the Zambezi. Chikwenya Camp's plunge pool overlooking the floodplain was surreal. This is what safari should be.

John's Camp is legendary for a reason — the guides's passion for Mana Pools is infectious. We tracked a wild dog pack for two hours on foot, watched elephants feed in the golden light, and slept under a billion stars on a fly-camp. Life-changing.
