Tarangire National Park
Baobab Giants & Elephant Herds — Tanzania's Hidden Gem
Why Visit Tarangire National Park?
Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's hidden gem — a landscape of ancient baobab trees, open savanna, and the winding Tarangire River that draws the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. During the dry season, thousands of elephants, along with wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo, congregate around the river in spectacular concentrations rivalling the famous parks. Yet Tarangire receives a fraction of the visitors, making it one of East Africa's best-value safari destinations. The park's iconic baobab-dotted landscapes and excellent predator viewing make it a photographer's dream.
Elephant Paradise
Tarangire has the largest elephant herds in Tanzania — herds of 300+ gather along the river in dry season. A truly spectacular sight.
Ancient Baobab Landscape
Tarangire's baobab trees are among Africa's most photogenic — some are over 1,000 years old, creating a unique and dramatic safari backdrop.
Fewer Crowds
Tarangire receives far fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, yet offers comparable wildlife — exceptional value and intimate encounters.
Tree-Climbing Lions
Like Lake Manyara, Tarangire's lions occasionally climb trees — a rare behaviour that makes for incredible photography.
Bird Watcher's Paradise
Over 550 bird species — the highest count of any Tanzanian park. The swamps and river attract spectacular breeding colonies.
Walking Safaris
Walking safaris in Tarangire's wilderness areas offer an authentic bush experience — track wildlife on foot with expert Tanzanian guides.

Tarangire National Park Safari — FAQ
June–October dry season is best — wildlife concentrates along the Tarangire River in spectacular numbers. Elephant herds of 300+ are common. Green season (Nov–May) is quieter but still excellent, with lower prices and superb birding.
Tarangire is approximately 120km (2 hours' drive) from Arusha. It's the closest major park to Arusha, making it an ideal first or last stop on a northern Tanzania safari circuit.
Yes! The classic northern Tanzania circuit is Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti. Most guests do 1–2 nights Tarangire, 1–2 nights Ngorongoro, and 2–4 nights Serengeti. It's one of Africa's greatest safari itineraries.
The Serengeti's Great Migration dominates Tanzania's safari marketing. But Tarangire's dry-season elephant concentrations rival anything in Africa, and the baobab-dotted landscape is arguably more photogenic. Safari insiders consider Tarangire one of East Africa's best-kept secrets.

“As an avid birder, Tarangire is paradise — I spotted 87 species in two days! The yellow-collared lovebirds and ashy starlings are park specials. The ancient baobabs create a landscape unlike anywhere else in East Africa. Oliver's Camp was authentic and wonderful.”

“Perfect introduction to our Tanzania safari circuit. The tree-climbing lions blew our minds and the kids loved counting elephants at the river. Much quieter than Ngorongoro — we felt like we had the park to ourselves. Excellent value for money.”
