About Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of nature's most astonishing creations. Fed by seasonal rains in the Angolan highlands, the Okavango River flows southeast into the Kalahari basin, where it fans out into a vast inland delta that never reaches the sea. The flood arrives between June and August β€” ironically during Botswana's dry season β€” creating a watery paradise that attracts wildlife from across the region.

Safari here is unlike anywhere else in Africa. Glide silently through papyrus-lined channels in a traditional mokoro canoe, watching elephants wade through crystal-clear waters and red lechwe leap across floodplains. The Delta is home to some of the continent's largest remaining populations of elephant, buffalo, and wild dog.

Botswana's low-volume, high-value tourism model means the Delta is never crowded. Camps are small (typically 8–16 guests), exclusive, and set in locations of staggering beauty. This is Africa at its most pristine β€” and its most expensive. But those who visit understand why every dollar is worth it.

Where to Stay

Insider Tip

Combine a water camp (mokoro and boat-based) with a land camp (game drive-based) for the full Delta experience. The scenery and wildlife change dramatically between the permanent delta channels and the dry-land islands. Three nights at each is ideal.
