Big Five Safari: Where to Go in 2026 for Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo & Rhino

The Big Five: Africa's Ultimate Wildlife Bucket List

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — were originally named by big-game hunters as the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today, they're the five most sought-after animals to see on safari, and ticking off all five remains the holy grail for wildlife enthusiasts.

But where should you go for the best Big Five experience? Not all destinations are equal. Here's our expert ranking based on decades of guiding experience.

Best Destinations for Each of the Big Five

🦁 Lion

Best: Masai Mara (Kenya) — home to over 850 lions including the famous Marsh Pride. The open grasslands make lion sightings almost guaranteed.

Also excellent: Serengeti, Kruger, Sabi Sands

🐆 Leopard

Best: Sabi Sands (South Africa) — the world's #1 leopard viewing destination. Habituated leopards allow close-up encounters that are impossible elsewhere. Sightings are virtually guaranteed.

Also excellent: Kruger (Lower Sabie area), Luangwa Valley (Zambia)

🐘 Elephant

Best: Chobe/Okavango (Botswana) — Africa's highest elephant concentration, with herds of 100+ common along the Chobe River.

Also excellent: Kruger, Amboseli (Kenya), Hwange (Zimbabwe)

🐃 Buffalo

Best: Kruger National Park — massive herds of 500+ buffalo. Practically impossible to miss.

Also excellent: Masai Mara, Serengeti

🦏 Rhino

Best: Kruger National Park (South Africa) — home to the world's largest rhino population (both black and white). Sightings are good, though poaching has reduced numbers.

Also excellent: Ol Pejeta (Kenya — for black rhino), Etosha (Namibia)
