Cape Town Weather Month by Month — Best Time to Visit & What to Expect

Cape Town Weather — A Complete Month-by-Month Guide
Understanding Cape Town weather is essential for planning your trip. The Mother City has a Mediterranean climate — warm dry summers and cool wet winters — but the weather can change dramatically within a single day. Here's what to expect every month.
Summer (December — February)
December
Avg High: 26°C | Avg Low: 16°C | Rainfall: 17mm | Sunset: 20:00
Peak tourist season. Hot, dry, long daylight hours. The famous Cape Doctor (southeast wind) blows strongly in the afternoons. Beaches are busy. Book accommodation and Cape Town tours well in advance.
January
Avg High: 28°C | Avg Low: 16°C | Rainfall: 15mm | Sunset: 20:00
The hottest month. Perfect for beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton, Muizenberg). Wind is strongest January-March. Great for water activities.
February
Avg High: 27°C | Avg Low: 16°C | Rainfall: 17mm | Sunset: 19:45
Still hot and dry. Wine harvest season begins in the Cape Winelands. Slightly less crowded than December-January.
Autumn (March — May)
March
Avg High: 25°C | Avg Low: 14°C | Rainfall: 20mm | Sunset: 19:00
One of the best months to visit. Wind drops, temperatures are warm, and summer crowds thin out. Wine harvest festivals in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
April
Avg High: 22°C | Avg Low: 12°C | Rainfall: 41mm | Sunset: 18:15
Autumn colours. First rains arrive. Still warm enough for outdoor activities. Excellent time for Garden Route road trips.
May
Avg High: 19°C | Avg Low: 10°C | Rainfall: 69mm | Sunset: 17:45
Winter begins. Rain increases. Accommodation prices drop significantly. Good shoulder-season value.
Winter (June — August)
June-July-August
Avg High: 17-18°C | Avg Low: 8-9°C | Rainfall: 80-100mm/month | Sunset: 17:30-18:00
Cold and rainy — but whale watching season begins in June! Southern right whales arrive along the coast. Hermanus whale watching is world-class June-November. Winter also brings dramatic skies, green landscapes, and waterfall hikes. Indoor activities: wine tasting, restaurants, museums, and V&A Waterfront shopping.
Spring (September — November)
September
Avg High: 19°C | Avg Low: 10°C | Rainfall: 40mm
Wildflower season! The West Coast explodes with colour. Whale watching peaks. Spring is underrated and beautiful.
October-November
Avg High: 21-24°C | Avg Low: 11-13°C | Rainfall: 30-20mm
Warming up. Beaches become swimmable again. Last chance for whale watching. Great value before the December rush. See our complete best time to visit guide.
