About the South African Giraffe

Standing up to 5.8 metres tall, the giraffe is the world's tallest living animal. Their impossibly long necks contain only 7 vertebrae β€” the same number as humans β€” but each one can be over 25 cm long. Giraffes are gentle browsers, using their 45 cm prehensile tongues to strip leaves from acacia trees.

South Africa's giraffe populations are healthy in most reserves, with Kruger hosting an estimated 5,000 individuals. Pilanesberg and the Waterberg reserves also offer excellent giraffe sightings, often at very close range.

Social Behaviour

Giraffes form loose, fluid social groups called "towers" that change composition throughout the day. They have no fixed herd structure but maintain strong social bonds, particularly between mothers and calves. Males establish dominance through "necking" β€” swinging their heavy heads like clubs in dramatic but rarely fatal contests. Recent research has revealed surprisingly complex social structures, with grandmothers playing important roles in calf survival.

Approximately 117,000 giraffes in Africa; South African giraffe subspecies numbers around 44,000

Best Time to Visit

Year-round β€” giraffes are non-migratory and highly visible due to their height. The dry season (May–September) is slightly better as reduced foliage makes them easier to spot against the landscape.

South African Giraffe Conservation

Threats

  • Habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and urbanization

  • Poaching for bushmeat, hides, and tail hair (used for jewelry and flywhisks)

  • Civil unrest and armed conflict in parts of their range

Conservation Efforts

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation leads global efforts to protect giraffes through research, community education, and habitat protection. In South Africa, giraffes benefit from extensive protected area networks. Translocation programmes move giraffes to suitable new reserves, expanding their range and maintaining genetic diversity. The "Twiga Tracker" initiative uses GPS satellite technology to study giraffe movements and inform conservation strategy.
