The chacma baboon is the largest of Africa's baboon species and one of the most intelligent primates on the continent. Cape Town's Cape Peninsula is home to around 500 baboons living in 16 troops — making it one of the few cities in the world where large primates live alongside urban communities. Baboons are highly social, living in troops of 20–100 individuals with complex hierarchies. They communicate through over 30 distinct vocalisations, facial expressions, and body language. Watching a troop forage along Chapman's Peak or traverse Table Mountain's slopes is a uniquely Cape Town wildlife experience.
