About the Sitatunga

The sitatunga is a shy, semi-aquatic antelope found in swamps, marshes, and papyrus beds across central and southern Africa. It is one of the most elusive large mammals on the continent — perfectly adapted to a swamp-dwelling lifestyle with elongated, splayed hooves, oily water-resistant fur, and the ability to submerge almost entirely with only its nostrils above water when threatened. Males have magnificent spiral horns and a shaggy, dark brown coat. Seeing a sitatunga in the wild is considered a rare privilege — a highlight of any Okavango Delta or Bangweulu safari.
