Sunbirds are Africa's equivalent of hummingbirds — jewel-like nectarivorous birds that flash iridescent colours as they dart between flowers. Cape Town is home to several species, most notably the Southern Double-collared Sunbird (metallic green head, red chest band, blue stripe) and the Orange-breasted Sunbird (a Cape fynbos endemic with emerald green, violet, and vivid orange). They can be seen hovering at aloes, ericas, and even suburban garden flowers throughout the city.
