Africa's Lions: A Species Worth Seeking
The African lion (Panthera leo) is the continent's most sought-after safari animal. With fewer than 25,000 wild lions remaining — down from an estimated 200,000 a century ago — seeing these magnificent predators in their natural habitat has become both more precious and more urgent. The good news? Several African destinations offer remarkably reliable lion sightings, and with the right planning, you can virtually guarantee a close encounter with the King of the Jungle.
Here are the 10 best places to see lions in Africa, ranked by the consistency and quality of sightings.
1. Masai Mara, Kenya — Africa's Lion Capital
The Masai Mara reigns supreme for lion sightings. With an estimated 850+ lions across the reserve and surrounding conservancies, encountering a pride here is almost certain on any multi-day safari. The open grasslands offer unobstructed views, and several prides — including the famous Marsh Pride featured in BBC's Big Cat Diary — have become habituated to vehicles, allowing incredible close-up photography.
Best time: Year-round, but July–October during the wildebeest migration delivers spectacular hunting scenes.
2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
The Serengeti holds Africa's largest lion population — approximately 3,000 lions spread across 14,763 square kilometres. The central Seronera area and the Namiri Plains (reopened specifically for big cat tourism) are hotspots. During the migration season, super-prides of 30+ lions have been documented hunting together.
Best time: June–October (dry season concentrates wildlife around water sources). Read our Tanzania safari guide for full planning advice.
3. Kruger National Park, South Africa
Kruger National Park is home to approximately 1,600 lions, making it one of the world's largest lion populations in a single protected area. The southern region (Lower Sabie, Satara, and the S100 road) is legendary for lion sightings. What makes Kruger special is the self-drive option — you can spot lions from your own car on the excellent tar and gravel road network.
Best time: May–September (dry season). For an enhanced experience, combine Kruger with the Sabi Sands Game Reserve where off-road driving brings you closer. See our Big Five South Africa guide for more.
4. Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa
Sharing an unfenced boundary with Kruger, Sabi Sands is arguably the single best place in the world for close-up lion encounters. Luxury lodges like Londolozi, Sabi Sabi, and Singita Sabi Sand employ expert trackers who know every pride's territory. Off-road driving means vehicles can follow lions through the bush, often approaching within 10 metres.
Best time: Year-round. Winter (June–August) is exceptional as vegetation thins and lions are more active during the day.
5. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
The Ngorongoro Crater — a 260-square-kilometre volcanic caldera — contains one of Africa's densest lion populations. Approximately 60 lions live within the crater walls, and the enclosed geography means they cannot migrate out. This isolation creates a unique dynamic where sighting a pride is virtually guaranteed on a single crater descent.
Best time: June–October. Morning game drives are best before the crater fills with mist.
6. Okavango Delta, Botswana
Botswana's Okavango Delta hosts the famous "swimming lions" — prides that have adapted to hunt in shallow floodwaters, a behaviour found nowhere else in Africa. Chief's Island and the Mombo Concession are particularly rewarding for lion encounters, often featuring dramatic hunts on buffalo and lechwe.
Best time: May–October (flood season provides the most dramatic scenery and wildlife concentrations). Compare with our Okavango vs Kruger guide.
7. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, supporting over 500 lions. The park's numerous pumped waterholes attract massive prides, and the Cecil Lion Legacy area (named after the famous Cecil) remains a prime lion-viewing zone. What sets Hwange apart is the quality of guiding — Zimbabwe's guide training is considered Africa's gold standard.
Best time: August–October (dry season drives lions to predictable water sources).
8. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa/Botswana
The red dunes of the Kgalagadi are home to some of Africa's most photogenic lions — the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. These are among the largest lions in Africa, with males weighing up to 250kg. The open landscape and limited vegetation make predator sightings exceptionally reliable, particularly along the dry Auob and Nossob riverbeds.
Best time: March–May (summer rains bring prey animals, and newborn antelope attract hungry prides).
9. South Luangwa, Zambia
South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris — tracking lions on foot with armed rangers is an unmatched adrenaline rush. The Luangwa River valley supports a healthy lion population, and night drives (unique to Zambia) offer the chance to see lions hunting under moonlight.
Best time: June–October (dry season). Walking safaris operate June–November.
10. Ruaha National Park, Tanzania
Tanzania's lesser-known gem, Ruaha hosts one of East Africa's largest lion populations in a park that receives a fraction of the Serengeti's visitors. The wide baobab-studded landscapes and diverse prey base support thriving prides, and the lack of crowds means intimate, private sightings.
Best time: June–November (dry season).
Tips for the Best Lion Sightings
- Go early: Lions are most active at dawn and dusk. Be on the road at first light for the best action
- Listen for roars: Lions roar primarily at night. Your guide can triangulate the direction and find them at first light
- Watch the prey: Nervous zebra, wildebeest, or impala staring in one direction often signal a hidden predator
- Choose private reserves: Private conservancies offer off-road driving and limit vehicle numbers at sightings
- Invest in a quality guide: A skilled tracker can read the bush and find lions where casual visitors would see only grass
